Strike One Pitching Program (ages 14 up)
The Strike One Pitchers Program is the premier pitching instructional program around. Started in 2004, the idea of Pete Serra (owner of an indoor baseball academy) Strike One has blossomed into more than just your basic instructional clinic. This program is a comprehensive, 5 month program that focuses not only on pitching mechanics, philosophies, and secondary pitches, but with conditioning to prevent baseball related injuries as well. The success rate of Strike One speaks for itself and many of the top pitchers in the metropolitan area have come through the program. Greg Modica has designed the format in which the Strike One Pitchers Program follows. Though many of the concepts have remained the same, the program is forever evolving to stay updated with the times. Greg has been involved leading the instruction since Strike One’s inception in 2004.
How does Strike One work?
This is a program that is based on the same ideas of your daughter's dancing school classes. Before you can be a pitcher, you must first learn the different steps of the delivery. Even the most accomplished dancers, some whom have performed the same routine thousands of times, must rehearse constantly to make sure the steps to their dance is perfect. Strike One carries those same principles over into the teaching of a sound mechanical delivery. The commitment expected for the athletes in the Strike One Program must be second to none. With two classes a week, and a five month program, attendance, attention, along with a good work ethic are key in order to retain all that is learned. This is not for your average recreational ballplayer. There are three stages in which the Strike Once Program follows:
Stage 1- Active Rest
• After a long season, the pitchers will take a step back from throwing. During this time, mechanics will be taught without the baseball. Incorporating the ball will only make things more difficult on the pitchers. Once they learn everything without the ball they progress on to the next stage. Conditioning will be at a lighter intensity to keep the body active without taxing the body too much.
Stage 2- Fundamental Throwing/Strength Build-up
• Now pitchers will begin to incorporate the act of throwing at short distances and lighter intensities with the pitching mechanics that they have learned. After a 3-5 weeks at this stage, throwing off a mound will begin so that pitchers can start getting comfortable with working at the elevated surface. Conditioning at this stage will get more intense so that each pitcher gets stronger for their upcoming season.
Stage 3- Season Preparation/Baseball Movements
• Mound sessions will now be done closer to game speed. Pitchers start to mix in there off-speed pitches and conditioning will now incorporate more movement exercises along with flexibility.
The Strike One Pitchers Program is one of a kind. It doesn’t just focus on mechanics because without the proper body strength and control, a pitcher cannot repeat his mechanics. As the game of baseball changes, so will the program, so that each athlete can compete to the best of their ability.
